CHARTED  v0.1.0
static · no backend

the whole planet, one character at a time.

What this is

CHARTED is the real world as a real-time 3D game drawn entirely in characters. Spin the globe, pick a spot on the map, dive in from three kilometres up, then walk, run or fly. Buildings stand at their mapped heights with windows by storey, streets carry their names, parks their trees, rivers and harbours move, and mountains rise from real elevation data, all lit by the sun where it is right now.

It runs in your browser with no sign-up and no tracking: the map is static files from open data (Overture Maps, OpenStreetMap, Mapterhorn, Protomaps, Natural Earth), streamed as you move.

Matterhorn

45.9900°N 7.6950°E · terrain from real elevation

The mountain is drawn from Mapterhorn’s elevation data: steep faces as strokes down the fall line, snow above the Alpine snowline, and the ridges of the Pennine Alps fading into haze up to 20 km away.
