Terms
The short version: play as much as you like, in your browser, for free. Don't copy the game, and don't scrape the map data off our servers.
The software is ours
CHARTED's code, art and design are © 2026 CHARTED, all rights reserved. They are proprietary: you may not copy, modify, redistribute or host them anywhere else without our written permission. That includes putting the game on another site or in an app.
The third-party software it is built with (three.js, MapLibre, PMTiles and others) keeps its own licence; see data & credits.
The map data is open data
The world is drawn from open data, and that data stays under its own licences, which data & credits lists: OpenStreetMap-derived data (via Overture Maps and Protomaps) under the Open Database License (ODbL), Overture's own data under CDLA-Permissive-2.0, elevation from Mapterhorn under its sources' open licences (CC-BY and others), the land cover from ESA WorldCover and live weather from Open-Meteo under CC BY 4.0, and the ocean floor (GEBCO) and Natural Earth in the public domain.
Use it through the app
Our map data servers are there for the game, not as a download service. Don't download from them automatically or in bulk (scrapers, crawlers, mirroring, proxies or other sites hotlinking them); use the game in your browser. The underlying open data is freely available from its original sources.
No framing
Don't show CHARTED inside a frame on another site. Link to it instead.
Privacy
There is no account and nothing to sign up for. What leaves your browser, and where it goes:
- The map, as you move: its files come from our map data servers. Which parts of the map are asked for says roughly where you're looking, as with any online map. A search asks the same servers for the part of the place index that holds the first letters of what you type; the rest of the search happens in your browser.
- Terrain: where it's finer than our own, the terrain round where you are comes from a third-party elevation tile service, which then sees the same.
- Live weather, only if you turn it on (
weather live): the latitude and longitude of where you are, rounded to about 10 km, go to a weather service, at most once every 15 minutes for each such spot. - The site and its data are served through a hosting and content-delivery provider, which keeps the usual logs of requests (such as your IP address, the time and what was asked for) and counts page views with analytics that set no cookies.
These providers may handle requests outside your country.
Your settings, saved places, journal and the map files kept for speed are stored in this browser on your device, and are never sent to us. Clearing this site's data in the browser removes them. Sharing a place, a flight or a daily result hands you a link or text (copied, or to your device's share sheet) to send yourself; nothing is posted for you.
No warranty
CHARTED is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. Maps can be wrong, out of date or incomplete: never use it for navigation, at sea or anywhere else. We aren't liable for any loss that comes from using it, to the extent the law allows.
